Living Life Profashionally: Malibu Mara

Once again, it's time to interview someone who is Living Life Profashionally! To Live Life Profashionally means to strike the balance of being professional and fantabulous. It means to carry yourself with class and to never stop reaching for your goals whatever they may be. I am so excited to introduce you all to this month's interviewee! She is one of my favorite bloggers and is truly Living Life Profashionally. This month's interviewee is the fabulous Tamara, founder of MalibuMara.com. Her blog covers everything from beauty and fashion to food and fun. Her bubbly personality shines through in every single post. I hope you learn as much from her as I have in this interview! Here is Tamara:

TPL: Why did you decide to start blogging?
Tamara: I began blogging before I started college. I wanted a way to store everything that inspired me online. I liked how Kanye West used to post a lot of inspiration on his blog before his Glow in the Dark tour. I also wanted a way for my friends to still keep up with me since we were all going to different schools. I was known for being a bit of a trendsetter when it came to style or music so I wanted to share that. Obviously it caught on to more people than just my friends. :)

TPL: What do you do for a living?
Tamara: I am currently an apparel buyer for a multilevel company that owns everything from boardwalks to casinos and over 400 restaurants.

TPL: Who is Tamara?
Tamara: A 20-something living in Houston trying to figure out how old I have to be to finally get my life together.

TPL: How do you manage time to run your blog efficiently?
Tamara: I am very organized so my planner is everything. In my monthly planner, I write everything from work events to social events as well as what blog posts are being published on that day. I work off of an editorial calendar and try to write most posts on the weekends. Having an editorial calendar helps streamline my postings, one of my biggest challenges when first trying to manage my time was writers block. My calendar helps with themes or post ideas so that I can stay on track.

TPL: What does it mean to Live Life Profashionally to you?
Tamara: Living life with your own style. Being true to yourself while being a boss.

TPL: What has been your favorite event to cover for your blog?
Tamara: My favorite thing is San Diego Comic Con. There is so much going on everywhere it's such a dream every time I go. I also love San Diego, the weather is always amazing.

TPL: What wold you say is the biggest challenge about fashion blogging?
Tamara: It seems like EVERYONE has a fashion blog! When it comes to campaigns, it's important to also be popular on other social media platforms. It can be frustrating when a "blogger" with 10K Instagram followers lands campaigns but really has no blog traffic. I think PR isn't clear on what they want these days with campaigns. At this moment, it's important to be on multiple channels so it can be difficult to keep up with. At events I'll tweet and take photos for my blog but now I have to also think about Instagram, Snapchat, Periscope and Pinterests. Sharing overload.

TPL: How would you describe your personal style?
Tamara: It's eclectic and always has been. I've mixed current trends with things I find at the thrift store.

TPL: What's your next must-have?
Tamara: I have my eye on a Barrington stripe bag. I can't decide on what color to pick so every now and then I build like five bags and then give up. I really want one!

TPL: What is a typical day in the life of Tamara?
Tamara: I don't think I have a typical day. On the surface, I wake up and work for nine hours but those nine hours are different everyday. I manage the apparel development for 12 different accounts so sometimes I work on something fun for a casino and other days it's a random kids program for the aquariums. Sometimes we have a random store opening (yeah... that shouldn't be random but it is) so we have to pull together an assortment. It's challenging but I love that about my job. I follow work up with the gym and then go home to my boyfriend and dog and work on my blog!

TPL: How did you gain a following on your blog?
Tamara: When I first started my biggest push came from working with Diggy Simmons. Since then, networking in Houston with other bloggers and joining blogger groups online has really helped me grow my brand.

TPL: Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
Tamara: In five years, I want to have my own business. I just want to create a better work life balance. I see my colleagues and I feel like they have no life outside of work. I never want to be like that.

TPL: What's something people would be surprised to learn about you?
Tamara: I'm actually 5'2". A lot of people who only know me online have no idea that I am a shorty!

TPL: If a new blogger came up to you asking for your advice and your only had a few minutes to give him/her your best tip, what would it be?
Tamara: My advice is always to just start and to be yourself. Like I said, there are so many blogs out there these days people will want to read your blog for you. Everyone has a story and it's important to be unique and true to yourself.

Black Style Icons

When I think of a style icon, I think of someone who is not only incredibly stylish but also someone who is a barrier breaker. In celebration of Black History Month, I have decided to compile a list of Black style icons who have redefined fashion and broken barriers.

Michelle Obama - The First Lady has been combatting childhood obesity and helping military families while effortlessly looking chic. Her style evolution from 2008 until now has been quite remarkable.

Diana Ross - Since the beginning of her musical reign as founding member of The Supremes, Diana Ross has been the epitome of glamour. Her long lashes, big hair, sequins and elaborate headdresses personified the 70's in a way no one else could. In addition to this, The Supremes became one of the world's best selling girl groups of all time. Her success helped to pave the way for other African-American artists to achieve mainstream success.

Lupita Nyong'o - You all may know that I have a special place in my heart for Ms. Nyong'o. Her incredible performance in 12 Years A Slave has made her an Academy Award winner and her impeccable style on the red carpet has made her a style icon. She is never afraid to rock a bold color and is an inspiration to young girls everywhere.

Dorothy Dandridge - Known for her bright red lipstick and off the shoulder tops, Dorothy Dandridge was nothing less than elegant. She was the first African-American to be nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award acting alongside other big names in Old Hollywood like John Wayne and Harry Belefonte.

Naomi Campbell - I guess we can say that Naomi Campbell has earned the right to be a diva. As the first African-American woman to grace the cover of Vogue in 1989, she has broken down racial barriers in the fashion industry. This supermodel has helped set fashion trends walking the runway for well known designers including Yves Saint Laurent and Gianni Versace.

Grace Jones - The one and only Grace Jones paved the way for androgynous looks we know today. Her fierce style inspired artists like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.

Solange Knowles - Solange Knowles has been a style icon of mine for some time now. Just take a look at her wedding photos and you will see why. She mixes prints and fabrics so well and is never afraid to try something bold.

TK and Cipriana Quann - These stylish sisters are literally goals. TK is a singer/songwriter and Cipriana is the co-founder of the blog Urban Bush Babes. They are able to mix vintage and modern pieces so well and have been featured in numerous magazines like Vogue and Allure.

Pucker Up

As Winter continues to creep its way in, we rely on our favorite lippies to keep us cute underneath that blanket scarf and parka and hat and hood and everything else we're bundled under. Valentine's Day weekend will definitely involve lipstick but that may become problematic when it comes to kissing or eating. Matte formulas will be the best bet for longevity and pigmentation. Here are my five favorite (matte) Winter lippies just in time for Valentine's Day so pucker up my loves!

1. NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream Transylvania:  This lippie has been in my top five for some time now. The smoked purple takes about 2 layers to get even and 3 layers to get vamped out but the final product is gorgeous.
2. MAC Stone: I did not like this color when I first saw it but once I swiped it on my lips, I fell in love. The color is a grayish taupe brown which sounds odd but it's a must try.
3.  ColourPop Tulle: I have to admit, I ordered this lippie with a completely different idea of how it would look. I was hoping for a light pinkish brown and it's just straight pink. After my first few wears, I got over the disappointment and fell in love with the pink. It's described as a dusty mauve burgundy (whatever that means).
4. MAC Diva: One can never go wrong with the classic red lip. This lippie is described as an intense reddish burgundy and that is exactly what it is. A lipstick staple.
5. ColourPop Guess: If you're like me and a bit too shy to go for a black lip, this is the lippie for you! This blackened violet is perfect for a super sexy look and lasts for hours. Side note: Colourpop is my new found love. The ultra matte liquid lipsticks are long wearing and super pigmented and only $6.00!!!!
